What to Ask Your Plastic Surgeon
When considering plastic surgery, it’s important to research your options so you can find the right surgeon for your aesthetic goals. In today’s fast-paced world of social media and mobile applications, with recommendations for everything from restaurants to pet sitters, you may not know where to even start. The very first step in finding the right plastic surgeon is to research which plastic surgeons come with the best endorsements. You can use medical-specific apps such as WebMD, or more general neighborhood apps like Nextdoor, where local consumers share their recommendations and opinions. Once you’ve found a plastic surgeon you’re interested in, you need to consider at least these five questions during your initial consultation.
How frequently do you perform my desired procedure?
Just like heart specialists and oncologists, you want someone who’s performed the procedure many times, has experience with all body types, and is skilled in current techniques. Ask to see current before and after pictures of the procedure the surgeon has performed. Also, ask the doctor for references related specifically to your procedure.
Have questions prepared in advance to ask these patients such as:
- Specifics of the actual procedure
- Recovery time
- Pain management
- Availability of the surgeon for post-op questions/concerns
Are you board-certified in cosmetic surgery?
In the United States, any licensed physician can legally perform a cosmetic procedure – even a doctor who has never had any formal training in cosmetic surgery. Make sure you ask about the surgeon qualifications and if they’re board-certified in cosmetic surgery. You should ask about any accolades and associations, and acquire documentation as proof.
What will my recovery be like?
Make sure you ask how much time you can expect to take away from your normal activities, including work, childcare, house care, and exercise. Be sure to ask specific questions about post-operative recovery practices and who to contact if you have any issues.
What type of anesthesia will I receive, and who will provide my anesthesia?
Will the procedure utilize local, regional or general anesthesia? Research the differences and make sure the anesthesia is administered by a certified physician (MD/DO), anesthesiologist, or a certified registered nurse anesthetist who can monitor you during the procedure, if needed.
What is the cost of the procedure?
Last, but not least, ask for an itemized breakdown of the procedure costs so there are no surprises.
Ultimately, remember that when it comes to your health, YOU are your best advocate and you need to be pro-active. If you leave a surgeon’s office feeling anxious or unsure, visit another surgeon.
