BREAST RECONSTRUCTION WITH BUTTOCK FLAP 261
A 45-year-old patient from Norfolk, VA had mastectomy of right breast I year before she came for consultation about breast reconstruction. Considering that she had a small breast to start with and did not want implants we decided for reconstruction with her own tissue in the form of buttock flap.
An island of skin with fat tissue underneath, including a small portion of muscle was harvested from her left buttock on a vascular pedicle (artery and vein). Vessels were then sutured to the matching size vessels in the chest to provide a blood supply needed for survival of the flap. In the same surgery left breast which was saggy and deflated was lifted (breast lift).
On the left image before surgery there is a red marked island of skin which will be used for right breast reconstruction. On the right image patient is shown 6 months after right breast reconstruction and left breast lift. Next image demonstrates a completed breast reconstruction with nipple and areola repair.
