BREAST REDUCTION 127
This 49-year-old patient came to our office for a consultation regarding breast reduction surgery. She has 4 adult daughters: all have large breasts, but hers are the largest. She wanted to “set an example for her daughters by having breast reduction first”. Although she wanted a “significant reduction”, she still wanted to keep “fairly large breasts”.
We discussed the potential risks and outcomes of breast surgery with the patient in detail: including breast size, location and appearance of the scars, possible hyperpigmentation of the scars, possible partial loss of areola, loss of sensation, etc.
Breast reduction surgery was done under general anesthesia and supervised by a board certified anesthesiologist in our Fort Lauderdale cosmetic surgery center. She was released to go home and accompanied by her daughter 1 hour after the surgery was completed. Her recovery went smoothly; she returned to work 10 days after surgery.
This patient with large breasts (a condition known as macromastia or gigantomastia) is shown before breast reduction surgery on the left and 15 months after breast reduction on the right. Patient still has a fairly large breasts what was exactly what she wanted (right). Notice fine, barely visible scars around areolas and on the lower pole of the breast; rest of the breast scar is hidden in breast crease. It is possible that patients with darker skin (type 4-6) develop as fine scars as this. The patient has to understand that the scar is an individual response to the injury (surgery) and as such, it is not entirely controlled by a surgeon.
