The neck is an important part of one’s image, and many people see signs of aging in the neck before other areas of the body due to genetics or weight fluctuations. At our well-regarded and accredited plastic surgery facility in Fort Lauderdale, Dr. Zoran Potparic offers a wide range of cosmetic procedures to suit the varying needs of his patients. Achieving a well-toned neck can be done through a neck liposuction surgery or a neck lift.

Neck Contouring Via Lipo

A patient who desires to reshape their neck due to fullness from fat accumulation underneath the chin but who does not show other features of neck aging can be a candidate for a neck lipo surgery. Patients who are optimal for a neck liposuction surgery tend to be young (teenage to mid-40s) and simply want to get rid of a double chin, or submental fat. The neck lipo surgery is minimally invasive but adds much needed contouring in the neck. The surgery tends to be on the shorter side, around 1 to 2 hours. Depending on the patient, anesthesia could be local, twilight, or general. Neck lipo surgery involves removal of superficial fat from the neck using a small-suction cannula and a few small incisions.

Neck Lift

Often, candidates for a neck lift have weak or loose neck muscles, giving the “turkey wattle” effect. Correcting this requires a surgeon to tighten the platysma muscle in the neck and to remove the excess skin and fat tissue. This procedure is called a cervico-platysmaplasty. Incisions are well hidden, placed underneath the chin and behind the ear, so that you don’t have to worry about unbecoming scarring. Like neck lipo, the neck lift may require local, twilight, or general anesthesia. The surgery is a little longer than a neck liposuction surgery, ranging from 1 to 3 hours.

Neck Lipo vs. Neck Lift

The type of neck rejuvenation surgery that a patient should undergo depends on their age and anatomy. Younger patients often only require neck lipo, whereas older and saggier skin may require a neck lift. Neck lifts are often associated with facelifts; patients seeking a neck lift may want to consider a full facial surgery.
