BREAST REPAIR FOR INVERTED NIPPLES IN SOUTH FLORIDA
An inverted nipple is pulled inward rather than pointing outward. It can be caused by milk ducts that are shorter than usual, prior plastic surgery or other surgery to the nipples or breast, or an infection or inflammation of the milk ducts. Both men and women can have inverted nipples, and the condition can affect one or both nipples.
Inverted nipple surgery involves releasing scar tissue or shortened milk ducts. The incision is made at the base of the nipple to release the bound tissues and shortened ducts.
Skin flaps placed beneath the nipple and/or pieces of cartilage help it to maintain the new protruding position.
There are some risks. Inverted nipple surgery can impair your ability to breastfeed or prevent it entirely. Other risks include reduced sensation in the nipple.

BREAST PROCEDURE: SHAPING THE NIPPLE AND/OR AREOLA
Occasionally a patient will request reduction of large or elongated nipples. This may be congenital or a result of nipple piercing. Enlarged nipples are treated by a plastic surgeon who will handle selective removal of redundant tissue and skin, creating smaller and more proportional nipples.
A reduction of large areola (the dark skin surrounding the nipple) is occasionally needed, as is a repositioning of the nipple/areola complex on the chest wall. It is important to know that male breasts have different aesthetic parameters than female. Dr. Potparic understands that in men, both the areola and nipple should be smaller, and positioned lower and more laterally (towards the arms) on chest wall than in women.
- Type of anesthesia: local or twilight
- Duration of surgery: 1 to 2 hours
- Surgical facility: office, AAAA-certified Ambulatory Surgical Center
- Recovery time: 1 week
- Discomfort: none
Why Do People Get Nipple Surgery?
Nipple areola reconstruction surgery, a subset of plastic and reconstructive procedures, serves diverse purposes driven by individual patient needs. Primarily, individuals seek nipple surgery as part of breast reconstruction following mastectomy, aiming to restore a natural appearance and symmetry. Cosmetic nipple surgery, on the other hand, is pursued for aesthetic reasons, addressing concerns such as asymmetry, size, or shape irregularities. Moreover, some individuals opt for nipple surgery to correct congenital anomalies or address issues arising from trauma or injury. Beyond the aesthetic realm, the procedure can contribute to psychological well-being, fostering a positive body image and self-confidence.
How Long Does Nipple Reconstruction Last?
Nipple reconstruction, a crucial component of breast reconstruction following mastectomy, is an intricate surgical procedure designed to restore a natural aesthetic. The longevity of nipple reconstruction can vary based on factors such as the surgical technique employed, individual healing processes, and patient-specific considerations. Generally, nipple reconstruction is considered a permanent solution, providing enduring cosmetic results. However, it’s essential to acknowledge that external factors, including age, lifestyle, and overall health, can influence the long-term outcome. With advancements in surgical techniques and materials, contemporary approaches to nipple reconstruction aim to enhance both aesthetic and functional aspects. Routine follow-up visits with the reconstructive surgeon like Dr. Zoran allow for ongoing assessment and ensure any potential issues are promptly addressed, contributing to the sustained success and longevity of the nipple reconstruction.
Are Reconstructed Nipples Always Erect?
Reconstructed nipples, while skillfully crafted to emulate a natural appearance, do not remain permanently erect. The surgical techniques employed in nipple reconstruction aim to recreate a three-dimensional structure, including projection and pigmentation, but the dynamic aspects of nipple erection are influenced by the absence of the underlying erectile tissue. Typically, reconstructed nipples exhibit a subtle and natural protrusion, responding to environmental stimuli and temperature variations akin to natural nipples. The goal of nipple reconstruction is to achieve a realistic aesthetic that harmonizes with the patient’s anatomy, contributing to the overall satisfaction of the individual.
Should I Get Nipple Reconstruction After Breastfeeding?
The decision to pursue nipple reconstruction after breastfeeding is a highly personal one, influenced by individual preferences and considerations. Breastfeeding can bring about changes in nipple appearance, and some individuals may choose nipple reconstruction to restore symmetry and enhance the aesthetic outcome. It’s essential to recognize that the choice for nipple reconstruction is subjective and not mandatory. Some individuals embrace the natural changes that occur after breastfeeding, finding beauty and uniqueness in the postpartum body.
Is Nipple Reconstruction Safe?
Nipple areola reconstruction, as with surgical procedures like labiaplasty surgery, comes with inherent risks, but it is generally considered safe when performed by qualified and experienced surgeons. As with any surgery, potential complications can include infection, bleeding, adverse reactions to anesthesia, or issues related to wound healing.
